The State of the Union

I was very glad to see talk of reforming the tax code during this year’s SOTU, but I’m very skeptical that any progress will be made on these proposals. Between the most stubborn Congress in history and the tendency of Barack Obama to break his promises when it’s politically expedient to do so, we’ll be lucky to even repeal the Bush tax cuts.

How about a new WPA to solve the unemployment problem and the crumbling infrastructure problem at the same time? Nope, can’t do that, that’s socialism. Here, have more of the “neoliberal biparatisan consensus” horseshit that got us into this in the first place.

It may not have surprised some of you when we learned that MSU’s Young Americans for Freedom was about to be listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, or SPLC, a civil rights organization dedicated to tracking the activity of such groups across the nation.
We have all seen the hateful and bigoted rhetoric MSU’s YAF spews forth on a daily basis. We’ve all seen its racist sidewalk chalk messages, its homophobic protest signs and other attempts to spread its deranged worldview around campus. Continue reading
