Obama Feeding the Multitude

From the Files is a series presenting choice selections from my extensive and highly disorganized physical archives here at Home Base. Here you’ll find lost cartoons, unfinished art, and forgotten doodles. Enjoy.

This cartoon was set to run last September, but I never finished it for whatever reason. This raw scan gives you a glimpse into the way my process works sometimes — I’ll often draw elements of the image separately and assemble them in Photoshop. This one was meant to recall religious iconography.

The “Legal” System

As part of the ongoing Predator drone program, President Obama has given himself the authority to order assassinations of suspected terrorists, including American citizens, without charges and without evidence. As it stands, the President his right to declare anyone in the world a “terrorist” and order their murder by remote-controlled killbots without the interference of pesky “judges” and “lawyers.” The administration refuses to even disclose its legal rationale for doing this, citing (what else?) “national security.”

The heinous National Defense Authorization Act extends “the battlefield” in the War on Eurasia Terror to American shores and grants the President the authority to detain any American indefinitely without due process, which is bad enough. This program, combined with the recent FAA bill allowing drones to fly in American airspace should send shivers down anyone’s spine.

The State of the Union

I was very glad to see talk of reforming the tax code during this year’s SOTU, but I’m very skeptical that any progress will be made on these proposals. Between the most stubborn Congress in history and the tendency of Barack Obama to break his promises when it’s politically expedient to do so, we’ll be lucky to even repeal the Bush tax cuts.

How about a new WPA to solve the unemployment problem and the crumbling infrastructure problem at the same time? Nope, can’t do that, that’s socialism. Here, have more of the “neoliberal biparatisan consensus” horseshit that got us into this in the first place.

We elected him, so now let’s get to work

Obama showed in the election his ability to convince voters to support his policies, but the test now is whether he can translate that ability to effect change within government itself.Barack Obama’s first week as president of the United States is in the history books, and what a week it’s been. The new president is obviously eager to demonstrate his commitment to changing the disastrous policies we’ve come to know and hate under the Bush regime.

He already has ordered the infamous prison facility at Guantanamo Bay to close within a year, lifted the ban on states from setting their own fuel efficiency standards, reversed the so-called “Global Gag Rule,” a ban on foreign aid to groups that offer advice on abortion, and ordered the military to begin designing a plan to withdraw from Iraq in 16 months.
