Nadermania!
From the Files is a series presenting choice selections from my extensive and highly disorganized physical archives here at Home Base. Here you’ll find lost cartoons, unfinished art, and forgotten doodles. Enjoy.
I believe this unfinished cartoon was from 2008, when Ralph Nader was considering running for president again:

This portrait of Raúl Castro, no doubt from 2008 when he became President of Cuba, was gathering dust on some bookshelf:

Sketched this many years ago in New York City, the scene through the front window of a Korean nail salon. This incredibly fat dude in a Knicks jacket was getting a pedicure while talking on his cell phone.

This cartoon was set to run last September, but I never finished it for whatever reason. This raw scan gives you a glimpse into the way my process works sometimes — I’ll often draw elements of the image separately and assemble them in Photoshop. This one was meant to recall religious iconography.
Growth
I was monkeying around with Photoshop’s animated GIF maker when I decided to throw together this animated self-portrait. I think I might try my hand at animation again (it’s been a long time).

An unpublished cartoon from 2008 about John McCain locking up the Republican nomination:

I apologize profusely for the cliché in the title, but finding this cartoon comparison of my 2002 and 2008 selves on an old computer forces my hand:
I’ll have to update this again for 2012, I think. I have entirely different hipster glasses but I’ve been known to still wear the Lincoln beard from time to time.
Tinge of the Ginge
I just had to post the high-resolution version of the ginger-haired dude from one of the labels I posted yesterday. Be sure to click to embiggen. Look at the lace on that glass!

Here are a few pieces I made for a gallery show in East Lansing in 2006. The show ended up not happening, but these survived:

These three cartoons were the ones I drew when I applied for the editorial cartoonist position at The State News in 2005. I’ve lost the original files, but printouts of them have been hanging framed in my parents’ house for some time:

Badass Rooster
Just applied for a freelance gig that involves drawing cartoon/clip-art animals. The ad specifically asked for applicants to submit a freehand drawing of a “badass rooster”:

Roosters are technically dinosaurs, which makes them badass by default.
In case you were wondering, this is the theme song of badass roosters everywhere.

Found this unfinished cartoon from 2011 the other day — I think I abandoned it halfway through due to its similarity to this excellent cartoon by Tim Kreider. I don’t have any recollection as to what the cartoon was supposed to be about, other than something related to the United States and the United Kingdom (as personified by Uncle Sam and John Bull).
Help finish this cartoon by providing a caption/dialogue! Leave your best in the comments, or send them my way at mikeramsey5 at gmail dot com or via Twitter @mikeramsey.

This is the last cartoon I’ll ever draw for a college publication. I’ve been drawing in college papers on and off since 2005, and have accumulated a large mass of published work that comes to a close with this cartoon. Truly, the end of an era.

The weather’s getting warmer, and like the gentle dandelion the #Occupy movement is back on the sidewalks. Also like the dandelion, the rich pay people to remove them from their property by spraying them with chemicals.
